Jamie Gorelick
After winning the recent presidential election, Barack Obama has now seen the need for a team of advisers to help him run the world’s most powerful nation. Jamie Gorelick was one of those who were considered for a spot — as attorney general to boot. Close associates of Jamie Gorelick were quoted in stating that the former Deputy Attorney General did not express interest in the position.
Jamie Gorelick was a vocal supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton during the latter’s campaign for the Democratic Party’s presidential candidacy. After Sen. Clinton conceded to Obama after a tight race for the presidential nomination, Jamie Gorelick contributed $10,000 to the Obama campaign fund.
With a wide and extensive range of experience that envelopes corporate, legal and national security issues, there is no wonder why Jamie Gorelick was tapped for the attorney general position.
Jamie Gorelick was the second top official at the Justice Department from 1994 to 1997 during the Clinton Administration and was the Pentagon’s general counsel in the 1990s. After the September 11 attacks, Jamie Gorelick was appointed as a member of the 10-man commission to investigate the 9/11 incident.
Her non-political activities include her stint with Fannie Mae, a big name in the mortgage lending industry, and as a partner in the law firm Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale & Dorr, a law firm based in Washington D.C.
With Fannie Mae, Jamie Gorelick was reported to have earned $25.6 million in salary from 1998 to 2003. As a lawyer for Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale & Dorr, Gorelick represented a list of high-profile clients, including Duke University.
Jamie Gorelick is a graduate of Harvard Law School and a champion of civil and women’s rights. Her impressive performance as a law practitioner earned her a place as one of the “greatest Washington lawyers” by the Legal Times.
Married and a mother of two, Jamie Gorelick would have been the second woman to be appointed as the country’s attorney general. Janet Reno, the first woman to become the United States attorney general from 1993-2001, was Gorelick’s former boss.
Gorelick once said that when people refer to someone as “sir,” it is an act of respect. She further adds that “Ma’am” is what people call their mothers.
