Michael Carpenter

Michael A. Carpenter is the chairman and CEO of Southgate Alternative Investments, a private equity firm based in New York.

Carpenter, who started out as Executive Vice President at GE Capital Corporation, moved on to Kidder Peabody in the early 90s. He served as chairman and CEO until 1994. In 1995 he joined Travelers Life & Annuity.

As chairman and chief executive officer of the company, Michael Carpenter took charge of planning and progress. He became instrumental in Traveler’s merger with Citicorp in 1998. The resulting venture became known as Citigroup. He served as Chief Executive Officer at Travelers Life and Annuity, Salomon Smith Barney, Citigroup Corporate and Investment Bank, and Citigroup Alternative Investments for a total of 11 years. Carpenter sat as CEO of Citigroup’s Corporate & Investment Bank until 2002.

In 2006, Michael Carpenter broke away from Citigroup and founded Southgate Alternative Investments. During his long career in the industry, Carpenter has been known to get himself out of tight situations. The many ups and down of his professional life have given him the wisdom and experience to match the work ethic and acumen he already possessed.

Michael Carpenter received most of his education in the UK’s Nottingham University. He is also a product of Harvard Business School, Harvard University.
