Nouriel Roubini
Nouriel Roubini, the infamous “Dr. Doom” of economics, was born on March 29, 1959 in Istanbul, Turkey. He is the chairman of RGE Monitor, an economic consultancy firm and an economics professor at the Stern School of Business, New York University.
After acquiring his doctorate in international economics from Harvard University, he started his academic research and policy-making by being a professor at Yale. Aside from teaching, he also serves at the Federal Reserve, World Bank, Bank of Israel, and the International Monetary Fund.
During President Bill Clinton’s term, he became the senior economist for the Council of Economic Advisers and then later on, to the Treasury Department as the senior adviser of Timothy Geithner, who is presently the Treasury Secretary.
The New York Times called Nouriel Roubini “Dr. Doom” after his delineation of the current economic crisis have turned out to be accurate. Although he is only in the 410th spot in the lifetime academic citations category, he ranked second in Prospect Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 greatest living public intellectuals.
On his recent predictions, he carefully assesses the US and global economic situation. In his own words, “As the U.S. economy shrinks, the entire global economy will go into recession. In Europe, Canada, Japan, and the other advanced economies, it will be severe.”
Nouriel Roubini’s accurate descriptions of the economic crisis have made him a major figure in the debate about the economy both in the United States and in the world.
